The Upper Valley
The Woodlands makes its home in a community that lies on the banks of the Connecticut River, a region fondly known as The Upper Valley. The area combines the best of urban and suburban living in a bucolic, rural setting.
Dartmouth College and its affiliated Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center form the core of the region. These world-class academic, medical, and research facilities provide the intellectual and economic engine for the entire community, making the Upper Valley one of the most desirable places to live in the country.
An academic community fosters wonderful intellectual opportunities. World-renowned speakers lecture at Dartmouth College throughout the year. Residents can take part in programs like the Institute for Lifelong Education at Dartmouth (ILEAD), which has offered over 1,000 courses to more than 18,000 participants in its first 15 years.
Dartmouth also plays a leading role in our vibrant arts community. The Hopkins Center at Dartmouth was named by the National Endowment for the Arts as one of the United States' exemplary performing arts centers. Each year "the Hop" hosts over 100 live performances in virtually all genres of music, theater, and dance, plus over 200 film screenings and other events. The adjacent Hood Museum presents an exciting calendar of exhibits and lectures.
Another neighbor of The Woodlands, the Lebanon Opera House hosts an equally rich schedule of live musical and theatrical events featuring internationally celebrated performers. The Opera House is the host venue for the beloved City Center Ballet, as well as Opera North, which has garnered numerous national awards and been praised by Money magazine as one of the best summer opera festivals in the world.
